Official Word on Upcoming Home Spaces

Apologies for the lateness of this message, ideally it would have been posted this morning but its just back from translation. There is an awful lot going on here and some of it is represented in this news update. Your questions are welcomed unless they’re about this Xi thing you keep going on about.

So, lets run through this weeks changes before giving a little more detail on what is coming relatively soon to Home

This week

Patch 1.11
This is a minor bug fix release and addresses a problem with Game Launching. If you opened the list of game sessions available at the same time one of the sessions launched it could cause a crash.

WATCHMEN
Two complete outfits for male characters and black & white t-shirts for male and female characters are now available for free from the Threads store. Some of the items are not quite ready and will follow on as soon as they are.

Clothing
Various items of free and purchasable clothing have been added

Whats coming soon

Street Fighter IV
The unlockable items are already available in Home and are rewarded for winning online matches in the game.
Purchasable outfits will be available within a few weeks.

Home Square
A slightly updated Home Square will arrive in early March, possibly as early as the 5th.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Space
This is currently being worked on and we hope to release this for you within a few weeks

SOCOM: CONFRONTATION Space
This Space is also nearly ready but a specific date for its release is not yet available, but we are expecting it within a few weeks.

Siren: Blood Curse & Resident Evil 5, Warhawk
Content for all of these have arrived here and are being prepared for SCEE’s audience now. We will bring you more information on these as it becomes available.

Game Launching
Many titles are preparing support for Game Launching but this often requires a patch to their title. It is not our intention to be announcing new releases and patches to other titles here in the Home community but hope to bring you news in the coming weeks.

Music within Home
Playing your own music to others within Home is an extremely complex licensing issue that will take time to solve, if it is at all possible.
In the meantime we are investigating various ways of allowing you to play your own music to yourself. We are also talking to other 3rd parties about making their music available to you in various ways.

Home suffering instant connection issues

Multiple users are complaining that they’re unable to access the now-launched PlayStation Home.

We’re getting no joy with it here at all, although some are reportedly able to launch, so we’re assuming it’s a load issue.

When trying to access the app, a network error C-991 is repeatedly served with the message, “The connection to the server was lost.”

Not for long, hopefully.

10 most overrated games of 2008

Many of the following ten games are great. A few came close to being on my top ten list (to be posted tomorrow). I would call a couple of them works of genius. But I think they’re the most overrated games of the year for the simple fact that I’m surprised at how well received they were. I wouldn’t recommend any of these without a few important caveats.

Read the 10 most overrated game of 2008 after the jump.

10) Civilization IV: Colonization
I’ve never won a single game of Colonization. But I’ve loved every game I’ve played. I don’t imagine many people would feel the same.

9) Left 4 Dead
It’s a great showcase for zombies that can run and co-op gameplay, but it’s as fast, slick, fun in groups, and gratifying as chasing a greased pig (take that however you will). Serious Sam and Robotron were pretty cool, too, while the thrill lasted.

8) Burnout: Paradise
A racing game largely devoid of meaningful physics or convenience, also known as Burnout: Drive All the Way Back to the Starting Line Because There’s No “Re-Try Race” Option, Suckers!.

7) Spore
The developers have explained that Spore was essentially three products: a content creator, a game-ish sort of thing, and a way to share stuff. Unless you’re interested in at least two of those three things, and if you’re willing for at least one of them to be rather anemic, Spore will be a head-scratcher.

6) Wii Fit
Wii fad.

5) Mass Effect
The long-in-the-tooth Bioware RPG formula applied to a generic sci-fi universe, with bouncing buggy driving/shooting sequences standing in for the exploration of alien worlds

4) Metal Gear Solid 4
For fans only. For everyone else, this is Kojima’s long slow wank and you have to get to watch.

3) Braid
This is not a game that moves and it’s not very accessible. You need to have a stomach for old-school platformers and mental brick walls. Which is a shame, because the place Braid eventually goes is sublime.

2) Little Big Planet
Awesome graphics! And those little sack people are so cute I could just eat them up! Now where’s the game?

1) Grand Theft Auto IV
One of the most amazing realizations of a real-world-ish place and one of my favorite games this year. Also the setting for a poorly told story and uninspired gameplay, and the subject of a system-shattering PC port.

Who can save the PS3?

For two game generations, Sony established itself as the industry leader: the popularity of the PSone carried over to the rampant success of the PS2. Of course, many people expected a similar situation for the PS3, but the transition for the latest system hasn’t been as seamless as people expected.
